Officials at Wilkes Community college have something to crow about today. WCC has earned a rating of "exceptional institutional performance" from the North Carolina Board of Community Colleges. It is one of only seven such institutions to do so as the state community colleges' rating system has undergone significant changes, making it more difficult for a college to earn this prestigious designation.

Ronda, NC, April 30, 2008—The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau of the Department of the Treasury approved the establishment of the Swan Creek region of the Yadkin Valley as an American Viticultural Area effective May 27, 2008.

The Swan Creek AVA is the second AVA in North Carolina, preceded by the Yadkin Valley AVA. Wines made from grapes grown within the geographical boundaries of the Swan Creek AVA may now carry that designation on their labels as well as the Yadkin Valley AVA.

Linville Caverns - located in Marion, NC. This million+ year-old cavern is natural geological wonder and a wonderful place to visit with the kids. They will learn about the stalagmites and stalactites, stand over the bottomless lake, see faces in the "clouds" and experience total darkness!

Mining for Gems, NC - located in Hiddenite, just a short drive from the Wilkesboros. Take your 'let's get dirty clothes' as you will be mining for gems in creeks and mud, and it is so much fun. The children will love the hidden treasures they fish out and these will be memories they keep forever.

Carowinds - High-speed rollercoasters, awesome water park, kids zone... what more do you need? A leisurely hour drive from the Wilkesboro's lies Carowinds, a thrilling themed adventure/amusement park.

More new jobs are on the way to Wilkes, as an alternative energy company is locating its operations here. No, we aren't talking about Fibrowatt. A partnership between Industrial Process Solutions and Bixby Energy will employ up to 120 people manufacturing a device that converts coal to natural gas more efficiently than current methods do. Sherman Aaron is the inventor.

The process is different from current coal gasification because it super heats the coal or other material such as solid waste or chicken litter, rather than setting it on fire as current technology does. Bixby will actually do the manufacturing, in the former mirror factory in North Wilkesboro. About 9 employees work there currently, but total employment at full production is anticipated to be around 120 people. At an event this afternoon, 5th District Representative Virginia Foxx said the situation is a win-win for everyone involved.
